More than 185 people gathered at the Astoria Golf and Country Club on May 14 to help support the CMH Foundation. The “Gala Evening at Old St. Andrews,” as well the 12th Annual Columbia Invitational Golf Tournament May 13, grossed about $170,000. The Fund-A-Need for the Foundation’s “Piloting Your Journey Cancer Care project raised $37,750.
A CMH-connected team won the golf tournament; the “Eaglemaniacs,” headed by Chris Laman, Manager of the CMH Pharmacy. New this year at the golf tournament was a “Money Ball” won by the Bank of Astoria team, sharing the pot with the CMH Foundation. The golf balls for the “Money Ball” were provided by a contribution from the Astoria Bicentennial Celebration made possible by Paul Mitchell, CMH Marketing Manager.
“The event definitely exceeded our expectations in this down economy, and I am amazed at the generosity of our community,” said CMH CEO Erik Thorsen. “The support for our oncology program and the needs of our cancer patients is outstanding.”The money raised will go to components of the Cancer Care project which are:
• Outfitting the Oncology Center for patients’ comfort and convenience.
• Mammograms for low-income women.
• A Nurse Navigator to assist patients with treatment options.
• A Survivorship Clinic for post-treatment support.
Fund-a-Need speakers were Randy Stemper, incoming CMH Board of Trustees president, and Robert Raish, MD, oncologist at the CMH Oncology Center. The Honoree for the evening was Terry Finklein, former CMH CEO for 20 years. Senator Betsy Johnson and Rep. Brad Witt attended the event. Significant contributions to the Fund-A-Need section dedicated towards Cancer Care were made by Marilynn Knowlson in Memory of Bob Hauke and the Samuel S. Johnson Foundation.
Foundation Executive Director Janet Niemi described what happened during the speeches. “My favorite part of the evening was a very touching moment during the introduction to the Fund-a-Need when Randy Stemper asked for a show of hands of those who had lost a loved one to cancer and nearly every hand in the room was raised,” she said. “He then asked for a moment of silence in memory of those who have been lost.”
The Title Sponsor for the event was Oregon Health & Sciences University and the Evening Sponsor was Legacy Health/Trauma Specialists LLP. Other Major Sponsors were Georgia-Pacific, Fred Meyer/North Coast, Pacific Coast Imaging, LLC, Medix Ambulance Service and Professional Credit Service.
